Ancillary Task #2 - Film Poster

Our second ancillary task required us to create a movie poster for our film. As a group, we couldn't decide what we wanted our poster to be like, to remedy this, we brainstormed our main themes and ideas within our film. We decided we wanted to show that religion featured in our film and we also wanted to show that Samantha is a main character in our film. After thinking about this we went away and looked for existing products.

Above I have inserted the film poster for Deviation. I have done this because we looked at this poster and liked the style of this, we wanted to attempt a design like this ourselves. We liked the way the male face faded into the female running and looking distressed. We also liked the colour red which was used as this can symbolise violence and anger.

Above is the first draft of our film poster. As you can see we abandoned this idea half way through as we were having difficulties when creating it. Although we followed the masking tutorial for photoshop (which I have inserted below), we had difficulties, as it looked like Ray was just floating at the top, more like he was looking down and protecting Samantha, when in our film he does the opposite. They grey strip at the bottom also gave a very mismatched and disjointed feel to our poster and we did not like it. The cross hanging from the title was a good idea when we thought of it, however, it got lost on the grey background behind it. Much like the title which also got lost as the font we used was too thin. We also realised we had not featured the theme of religion as much as we wanted to. We felt that we needed to do alot more research into film posters which include the same themes as our film.

Further Film Poster Research
In order to carry out better research into film posters that shared similar themes, we conducted a Google search for films which had religion or rape as a theme. We were very lucky and found two film posters which we used to look at conventions and deconstruct them to help us when creating our own. Below I have inserted the film posters for Doubt and Trust and I have also inserted our deconstructions of each poster.
Above is the poster for Doubt, we are going to use the main idea for this poster to model our own on. We like the idea of a large cross featuring in our own poster and will be using this poster as inspiration.
Above is the poster for Trust, we like the positioning of the crew's name and production company information and would like to put our own in the same place as we feel it is out of the way if it is put down the bottom. We also like the positioning of the tag line and will probably position ours beneath the main image too.

Below I have included our deconstructions of the two posters which we found. We have explained the conventions of each poster which helped us to realise our final product.

Our Final Film Poster
Below I have embedded a copy of our final product. We used the cross idea as our main image, however, instead of making it the main feature we wanted to fill the shape with a picture of Samantha. We added an effect to the image in order to add extra interest and also blurred the edges of the image. We positioned the tag line like the one on the poster for Trust. We also chose to have a religious tag line to further establish the theme of religion in our film and poster. As a group we are very pleased with our final product and think it has come a long way since our first draft.

Process of Creating Final Poster
Below I have embedded a screencast of the process we went through to create our final film poster in PhotoShop. It includes details on how we created the shape of the cross and how we added the ffect to the image.
